VETERAN'S SERVICES

As a resource for work as a chaplain among veterans Funeral Service-Jewish We have come together in the shadow that has fallen on these people. We raise our voices together in prayer to the Father above, asking for comfort and strength. We need light when gloom darkens our existence; whence can it come but from the creator of light? We need fortitude and resignation under the chastening of the Lord; whence can these come save from Him who lays the burden upon us? Who among us has not passed through trails and bereavements! Some bear fresh wounds in their hearts and therefore feel more keenly the kinship of sorrow. Others, whose days of mourning are more remote, still recall the comfort that sympathy brought to their sorrowing hearts. And those of us who have not yet tasted of the bitter cup cannot know how soon we may be called on to drink of it. All that we prize is but lent to us and we must surrender it when God demands. We are all travelers on the same road, which leads to the same end. Responsive Reading I lift mine eyes to the mountains: Whence cometh my help? My help cometh from the Lord who made heaven and earth. He will not suffer thy foot to be moved; He that keepeth thee doth not slumber. Behold, He that keepeth Israel doth neither slumber nor sleep. The Lord is thy keeper; the Lord is thy shade upon thy right hand. The sun shall not smite by day nor the moon by night, The Lord shall keep thee from all evil; he keepeth thy soul. The lord shall guard thy going out and thy coming in from this time forth and forever. Praise be the Lord, to whom all praise is due. Praise be the Lord, to whom all praise is due forever and ever. Praised be Thou, O Eternal our God, Ruler of the world. Thy word calleth forth the evening twilight, Thy wisdom openeth the gates of heaven so that morning shall alternate with eventide. In human life, too, thou has ordained that the daylight of Joy shall follow the night of sorrow. Thy wisdom hath established the succession of life and death, of grief and hope. All things change but thou changest not. Thou abidest to all eternity. Congregation rises Shema Yisrael, Ado-nai, Elo-hen-u, Ado-nai Ech-od Shema Yisrael, Ado-nai, Elo-hen-u, Ado-nai Ech-od Hear, O Israel: the Lord our God, the Lord is One. Praise be His name whose glorious kingdom is forever and ever. Congregation is seated Thou shall love the Lord, thy God, with all thy heart, with all thy soul, and with all your might. And these words which I command thee this day, shall be upon his heart. Thou shall teach them unto thy children, and shalt speak of them when thou sittest in thy house, when thou walkest by the way, when thou liest down. And when thou risest up. Thou shall bind them for a sign upon thy hand and they shall be for frontlets between thine eyes. Thou shall write them upon the doorposts of thy house and upon thy gates: That ye may remember and do all My Commandments and be holy unto your God. In my distress I cried to the Lord and heard me. He healeth the broken in heart and bindeth up their wounds. As one whom his mother comforteth, so will I comfort you, saith the Lord. I am the Lord thy God who sheltereth thee with the shadow of My hand. The Eternal God is thy dwelling place and underneath are the everlasting arms. The Lord is a stronghold in the day of trouble. Eternal is Thy power, O Lord, Thou art mighty to save. In lovingkindness Thou sustainest the living, in the multitude of Thy mercies Thou preservest all Thou upholdest the falling and healest the sic, freest the captives and keepest faith with Thy children in death as in life. Who is like unto Thee, Almighty God, Author of life and death, Source of Salvation? Praised be Thou, O Lord, who hast implanted within us eternal life. Silent Prayer The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want. 2 He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters. 3 He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake. 4 Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. 5 Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. 6 Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever. ADORATION Congregation rises Let us adore the ever-living God, and render praise unto Him who spread out the heavens and established the earth, whose glory is revealed in the heavens above and whose greatness is manifest throughout the world. He is our God there is none else. We bow the head in reverence, and worship the King of kings, the Holy one praised be He. Congregation is seated May the time not be distant, O God, when Thy name shall be worshiped in all the earth, when unbelief shall disappear and error be no more. We fervently pray that the day may come when all men shall invoke Thy name, when corruption shall give way to purity and goodness, when superstition shall no longer enslave the mind, nor idolatry blind the eye, when all who dwell on earth shall know that to Thee alone every knee must bend and every tongue give homage. O may all, created in Thine image, recognize that they are brethren, so that, one in spirit and one in fellowship, they may be forever united before Thee. Then shall thy Kingdom be established on earth and the word of Thine ancient seer be fulfilled: The Lord will reign forever and ever On that day the Lord shall be One and His name shall be One. At thy command, O God we have laid to rest a dearly beloved one. We murmur not at Thine inscrutable way; we pray for strength to bear what Thou has laid on us. Let Thy light shine on us in the night of our sorrow that we may find the path of life and follow it towards the goal, which Thou hast appointed for each of Thy children. We thank Thee for the life Thou hadst given and in Thy wisdom hast taken away. Make us to know Thy ways that in our love we may triumph over grief and despair. Calm Thou our troubled spirits that athwart our tears may arch the rainbow of Thine eternal promise. Praise be Thou, who comfortest the mourners. Amen. Mourners rise Extolled and hallowed be the name of God throughout the world which He has created according to His will. And may He speedily establish His kingdom of righteousness on earth.
